Learn how to rip a DVD free & easily:

1

Download Freemake software for Windows

To rip a DVD to computer, download FREE ripping software here. It perfectly works on all the recent Win platforms including Windows 10, 8, 8.1, 7, Vista.

By default, you download the lightweight online installer version which takes the required components from the Internet during the installation. In case you don't have a stable Internet connection, please get the free offline installer from the Downloads tab.

The installation process is simple and fast. Everything you need to do is to read the EULA, choose the location for the program and decide whether you need a desktop and a quick-launch icon. You don't need any additional plugins or library to rip DVDs and convert Blu-rays. The tool starts automatically after the installation.
2

Add a DVD disc to rip

Insert a DVD disc into your computer CD/DVD drive. It may be protected or not. Press the "+DVD" button, then select your drive with the disc and VIDEO_TS folder. Choose the largest .vob file from the list. It's the main DVD movie.

In case your disc contains several episodes, and you want to rip multiple the movie files, select all VOB videos from the VIDEO_TS folder.

Here you can also choose subtitles and language audio track if the video has several of them. Pay attention to the file info line and select the respective options for subtitles & audio file.

You can preview the resulted video from your disc in Freemake editor (double-click the file to open it in the new window) and check that you made everything correctly.
3

Choose an output format for ripping

You may convert your DVD movie to AVI, MP4, MKV, MPG, WMV, FLV, SWF, MPG, 3GP. The software also provides ready profiles for the most popular gadgets: iPhone, iPad, Sony PSP, Android phones & tablets, Xbox, and other devices.

Decide what you are going to do with the ripped movie. AVI, WMV or MKV are the best options to store the backup on your computer and edit the file. MP4 is ideal for transferring onto smartphones, gaming consoles, tablets, and sharing online. Both AVI and MP4 are good for watching on a TV screen.

Pick the extension on the formats bar at the bottom of the program.
4

Adjust ripping parameters

In the new window of the selected format, you may change the conversion profile or use the standard preset.

By default, there comes the "Same as source" preset. It means that the video dimension, bitrate and other settings will be the same as in the original copy.

You may change the video resolution and all other parameters like video and audio codec, fps, bitrate, etc. in an easy way. It's also possible to create a totally new profile for your rare mobile device.

Please don’t choose Full HD options. Due to the nature of the DVD format, the movies in it don’t exist in full high quality dimensions. The highest resolution that the DVD video format can handle is 720x480 pixels per frame for NTSC or 720x576 pixels per frame for PAL.
